Tempest Of The Sea (2017)
full orchestra (medium-advanced, grade 4)
approx. duration: 6 minutes, 40 seconds
"Tempest Of The Sea" is a work written for full orchestra. It is a programmatic work that musically depicts an adventure at sea. The opening features an ocean drum, ostinato in the harp and mallet percussion and a cascading effect that is found in the brass that set the scene for what seems to be a beautiful morning at the beach and shoreline or out at sea. As the day begins to start, more layers are added in the texture that expand and escalate to a climatic joyous moment. Then the key of the work starts to gradually shift to minor and alludes to something ominous on the horizon. With a huge blast our of nowhere from the ensemble, a siren and thunder is depicted. The storm begins to start to form gradually and move closer to shore and the ocean begins to get rougher and the music develops into a mad, forceful, and chaotic frenzy. Eventually a calmness begins to settle back in at the completion of the storm and a return of the ocean drum and new variation of the opening ostinato returns indicating a new calmness after the wreckage of the storm. Motives from the opening return, some slightly adjusted and lead up to the relaxing and hopeful ending to the work.
