Scherzophrenia (2019)
solo piano (advanced, grade 5)
approx. duration: 4 minutes, 30 seconds
The term, "Scherzophrenia" is a wordplay on schizophrenia combined with scherzo. The piece is composed with the idea of the mental disorder in mind. People who face this unfortunately have to experience going through symptoms of feeling as if they have lost touch with reality and tend to show an unorganized and confused state of behavior because of this. They are constantly "in-and-out" of the real life happening around them and mentally walk into these different hallucinations and delusions.
The work, "Scherzophrenia" is based on short motivic ideas that are reoccuring in different forms and mended together in different moments throughout the work. The motifs return in several different octaves of the piano range. The use of juxtaposition from the delicate, dreamy motives in the upper registers straight into the heavy bass figures help to give the work its character and depict going in and out of realities, peace to chaos for example.
