Fanfare for Woodwind Quintet (2017)
woodwind quintet (medium-advanced, grade 4.5)
approx. duration: 5 minutes
"Fanfare for Woodwind Quintet" emerged from the challenge of writing a fanfare for woodwinds instead of for the traditional brass. For example, Philip Sparke composed the “Molto Vivo” section of his "Dance Movements" to feature the woodwinds in a flashy, heroic character more often reserved for brass. I attempted to likewise break an instrumental stereotype.
The opening of "Fanfare for Woodwind Quintet" features intervals of a perfect fifth, trills, rhythmic ostinatos, and other gestures that call for action. The middle section represents death, loss, or defeat in battle through its ominous atmosphere – a natural association, since fanfares were used in war, battle, or competition. The final section, however, with its almost hopeful and rejuvenating version of a recap of the opening section and the brilliant texture of the coda depicts rising up stronger from loss or defeat, and advancing toward victory.
